You're Conceding the Menu?
Nick -
I must be hallucinating -- did I actually read that you'd concede the menu to Brandon? I'm almost certain that's one of the signs of Ragnarok.
I'm not certain, however, it's enough to persuade me that packing is worthwhile. I'm afraid that I'm long out of the habit of packing quickly and lightly. And of course I'm not going to be able to invite young VeinGnawer if we meet at your place; he doesn't have any choice but to tolerate you and Lairunya here in Glenzor, but to put him out in the wilderness among elves with no orcish rank? Hmm. It might be amusing to see how far he's willing to go to please me. But, no; I've dropped some hints about the dinner and seen the avaricious gleam in his eye, so making it clear that he's not invited, after all, should make him work twice as hard to please me in the future. It's good to keep these young upstarts in their place.
Good. That's settled, then. But don't invite any handsome elven paladins to the dinner; I'm sorry, but I refuse to have Angel marrying an elf. She's going to have a difficult enough time as head of the family without that. A paladin, Glenzor might be able to tolerate -- as long as he stays out of the family business -- but an elf would ruin her.
Did you finally lay a decent rug down in our room, or should I bring one with me this year? I'm not getting any fonder of the winters out there. They may be dry, but they're damn cold, and I can't seem to shake this cough. It's probably time for another Heal, although the lectures I have to listen to as a price for the spell are almost enough to make me prefer the cough.
Re: war, Danny and I won't let the Company suffer because of any silly government decisions. Besides, an elven/orcish war would cancel all the trade agreements you and Lairunya negotiated for ScintCo and seriously cut into our profit margin. If Glenzor wants another war, I can think of a few locales full of exploitable resources that would serve our corporate interests much better.
If Tamsen's political interests are at all inclined toward business, perhaps we can eventually put him one of the offices in Arthinon as a middle manager. Give him some practical responsibility to learn from, but keep him under the thumb of somebody senior until he finishes making mistakes. Laurie knows the most about the Arthinon branch; he could probably work things out, once the boy's of age.
I'll go tell Daniel about the gathering; he'll be happy. I presume you'll be sending out the messages to everyone with an actual date on it. I can contact Angel, unless Dmitri's corresponding with her. I presume there's room for Misha? He'll be insufferable if he's left behind, even though I'd much rather have him here representing me. I wish Daniel weren't so conservative on the simulacrum issue; I detest trusting staff.
Off for another in a series of unending debates over the government budget. If I had a simulacrum, I could send it in my place. Well, actually, the palace's antimagic security would probably dismantle it, but it's a nice fantasy. How are you handling financial matters, over there? I can't imagine you enjoying them much. Does Tatianna handle them for you?
Oh -- the guild decided to remain neutral, and the undead contingent is unhappy about it. Since S.E. hasn't said anything about the matter to me -- he has plenty of protections of his own -- I'm content to let natural selection do its part. Or unnatural selection, as the case may be. In fact, I could use a re-stock on my powdered ghoul bone. Maybe I'll send out a servant to see if the price of undead components is going down. Hmm. Now I really am curious about the identity of the killer ... we might be able to come to a mutually satisfactory business agreement....
